Creative Expression and Hands-on Learning in Pre K!

Greeting dear parents!

How was your week? We hope your week was as great as ours in the Pre K class! Read on for a run through of what we’ve been up to.

Large Group

Our large group is always a highlight of the week- a fun and engaging time that fosters social emotional development and helps us get to know each other! This week, so much happened as we celebrated reaching 100 days of school! We did crafts together, discussed what it means to be a student and member of a school community, and so much more. This festive energy motivated our students in other activities as well, which we were glad to see.

Literacy

This week in Literacy, we continued with CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words that use the vowel letter "e" to introduce new vocabulary to the class. The class also practiced with the CVC word materials in small groups and helped each other. The spirit of collaboration and teamwork in the class makes us very proud!

In another activity, the children traced CVC words, read, matched, and colored. This activity was helpful for practicing reading simple words.

Math

Our math lesson focused on symmetry in shapes, and it was simply delightful! First, we explained the concept of symmetrical shapes to the children by folding a shape in half to show that both sides look the same, using different materials. Then, the children created symmetrical shapes on paper by starting with half of a shape and completing the other half to match. They did an excellent job!

Science

This week in our science class, we cleaned up the planet Earth. This idea stemmed from our lessons about planets and discussions about our home planet. The children cleaned the school compound by using brooms, gloves, and trash cans. Everyone was engaged in cleaning the compound and was really excited about the activity. They all participated with passion and helped each other.

Art

This week's art focused on the colors and shapes in the fascinating creature of the butterfly! In this activity, the children are colored by observing the shapes and colors. They were tasked with finding the same shape for the color inside the butterfly and coloring it accordingly. This activity was very helpful for their fine motor skills and coloring abilities, and most of the children showed significant progress. They colored inside the lines, which helped them focus and connect shapes and colors, enhancing their critical thinking. It was also a great way to connect science topics of animals, categorization of species, the life cycle of a caterpillar to art! Interdisciplinary activities like this one allow the students to connect concepts and reinforce what we’ve been learning.

Journal

Our journal time is always an exciting opportunity for self expression in the Pre K class! Furthermore, the introspective time drawing individually helps them calm down after spirited play and to access and express their feelings by sketching or drawing freely in their journals. Each time we begin, we give them a few minutes to think about what they want to draw. Then, the children start their entries while listening to classical calm music. If they need help, we provide examples from our own experiences, and then they create their own ideas. As usual, the class did a fantastic job! They were thoroughly engaged and enjoyed sharing their creations upon finishing them.
