Creative Fun In Pre-K

Greetings dear parents!

How was your week? We apologize for the delayed blog, but we had such an exciting and vibrant time last week- especially with our Demera celebration that we wanted to make sure we could include those highlights here too! We want to once again thank all our wonderful LE families who joined us for the bonfire. It was a beautiful time and the children had a blast!

Large group

Our large group time was fun and engaging as always! There is story time, different new songs, reading the calendar and discussions, through which we learn different new things about each other. We are also learning through games. Additionally, this week we've been practicing Ethiopian new year songs to perform on the Demera for the parents.

Literacy

This week in our literacy class, we learned about "Primary colors". Learning about colors will help children sort, organize and compare objects. Early identification of colors helps children be able to make predictions and observations. Identifying and describing colors improves the children's abilities in many ways. Our goal with primary colors is that children will be able to identify the 3 primary colors, which are Red, Yellow and Blue. Children are more drawn to colors that are bright. Such colors can help in creating a sense of positive energy and playfulness. In this case the children colored on the paper primary color mixed what they have learned in large group sessions, in science and in different times during our week. This activity also helps develop fine motor skills!

Scienec

This week in science the class tried a "Primary color mixing experiment". Due to the fact that we learned primary colors in our literacy session, we want to try out a color mixing experiment in science. They also learned that these three colors (red, yellow and blue) cannot be created and that they already exist, but if they are mixed in a certain way they create secondary colors (purple, green and orange).

1. Blue and red mixed together make purple.

2. Yellow and red mixed together make orange.

3. Blue and yellow mixed together make green.

When the children did this color mixing experiment by using paint to look at the results and create a secondary color by themselves it was a beautiful moment for them. We are so proud of our class full of scientists!

Math

This week in our class we did "Fit measurements" . Fit measurements can be a fun way to introduce concepts like size, shape, and spatial awareness. This also helps the children learn about fitting objects together. We used different objects and different size materials and measured the height of the stack, and which material fits with another one. Using fit measurements in playful activities helps the children grasp important concepts while developing critical thinking and fine motor skills.

Demera Celebration

Last Thursday, our whole school community got together to celebrate the traditional Ethiopian holiday Demera. One of the most signature trademarks of this holiday is gathering together for a big bonfire, and we did exactly that! In addition to the bonfire, the children had been hard at work in the past few weeks preparing a special performance, and they did a stellar job with it. We appreciate everyone who came out to join us, it couldn’t have been the same without you!
