Early preschool and Preschool This Week
Dear parents,
We had an amazing week in Early Preschool and Preschool. We hope yours was nice as well. Please be informed that school will be closed on Wednesday in observance of the Ethiopian New Year. We wish all those celebrating a Happy New Year!
Large group
In our large group sessions, we had an incredible time engaging in a variety of exciting activities. We began our day by discussing everyone's morning routines and what they had for breakfast. It was wonderful to hear about all the different meals our students enjoyed to start their day. Following our morning chat, we sang our "Good Morning" song, which always sets a positive tone for the day.
Our students especially loved singing their favorite song, "Little Bunny," which brought lots of smiles and energy to the room. We then delved into exploring the days of the week, taking attendance, and discussing the weather. These activities help our students grasp essential concepts while having fun. Our story time featured the book "Get Ready to Dress," which captivated the children’s attention. After the story, we discussed who helps them get dressed, encouraging them to share their personal experiences.
On our message board, we explored different fruits. Our students demonstrated impressive knowledge about various fruits and eagerly shared their personal favorites. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to express their preferences and learn more about healthy foods. Overall, it was a week filled with joy, learning, and interactive activities. We look forward to more wonderful experiences ahead.
Art
This week, our art session was a delightful and engaging experience for everyone. We embarked on a fun pizza-themed project that had our students excited and involved. We started by cutting out triangle shapes from colored paper to represent pizza slices. Each student received an A4 sheet of white paper to serve as their pizza base. They then stuck the triangle shapes onto their paper, arranging them to create their unique pizzas. Next, we provided yellow paint for them to cover their pizza slices, mimicking the cheese. Once the yellow paint dried, we wrote each student's favorite number on their "cheese”. To finish off the pizzas, we added a fun touch by having the students dip a brush in red paint and tap it onto their pizzas, simulating the look of tomato sauce. The students had a great time with this creative activity, combining their artistic skills with a bit of mathematical fun. It was a fantastic way to merge creativity and personal interests, and everyone left with a proud pizza masterpiece.
Library
In our library session, we read a book called “Big Brother”. It provided many examples of what it means to be a kind and caring big brother. The children were very attentive while listening to the book. Afterward, they explored various other books and selected one to take home. It was truly a wonderful time!
Math
In our math session, we dove into the exciting world of shapes. We began by discussing fundamental geometric figures: circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. This introduction set the stage for a dynamic, hands-on activity designed to reinforce their understanding and make learning enjoyable.
To bring our lesson to life, we prepared a variety of wooden and plastic shapes. Each child had the opportunity to interact with these tangible objects, which allowed them to explore the characteristics of each shape up close. We then mixed all the shapes together and laid out A4 papers with printed shapes on them.
The activity was organized in a turn-based format, where each child took turns matching the shapes they picked with the corresponding shapes on the A4 papers. This approach not only kept the children engaged but also encouraged them to think critically and develop their spatial awareness. The children were actively involved, and the hands-on nature of the activity made the learning experience both enjoyable and educational.
Music
In our music session, we had a blast engaging with a variety of songs and musical instruments, creating an environment where children were both entertained and actively involved. The session featured a mix of classic and playful tunes, including "Five Little Monkeys," "The Floor Is Lava," and "Baby Shark." Each song was carefully chosen to captivate the children’s attention and encourage their participation.
The fun didn’t stop with singing alone. We took the exploration further by introducing a range of musical instruments. The children had the opportunity to experiment with the piano, guitar, xylophone, and various shakers. This hands-on approach allowed them to discover different sounds and rhythms, fostering their creativity and musical curiosity.
