Everyday Adventures In Pre-K
Greetings dear parents!
How was your week? We hope you had a fantastic week. Here in the Pre K class, it’s been an amazing week- filled with creativity, exploration, and lots of laughter! From colorful painting projects to hands-on activities, the kids were busy learning and having a blast.
Large Group
Large group time in Pre-K is an engaging part of the day where the whole class gathers to build social, communication, and cognitive skills together. In our large group we always greet each other, go through the morning messages and calendar. We also discuss the weather that day, and do a lively song and movement activity! If we aren’t singing and dancing the morning away, we might also do a different group activity or game. Last but not least, large group is one of our favorite sessions to do a group story time! We particularly love this part of the day as it is an excellent opportunity for building community in the classroom and introducing new learning topics in an enjoyable way.
Literacy
The children had a blast this week in literacy! Our activity was a classic game with a fun twist- "Letter bingo" We gave the class each a letter card, with a different combination of letters. Then, when the letter that someone has is called, that person will raise their letter and say bingo. Through this bingo game kids continue on their educational journey of recognizing letters and sound.
Science
In our science session this week, we focused on healthy food! Our emphasis was on some familiar vegetables (carrot and broccoli) and some fruits (banana and apple). For the activity, we first demonstrated how to safely hold a knife and cut something. Then, the children got to try it out under careful supervision! We are so proud of how diligently they prepared the produce. Finally, the class got to try what they prepared!
Everyone was so excited and proud of what they were able to do. These kinds of activities help build fine motor skills, increase the children’s comfort with healthy foods, and give them a sense of accomplishment in the kitchen. Plus, it makes eating healthy an exciting, hands-on activity they can look forward to each day!
Math
This week our math activity was engaging and visual. The children got a chance to "count and circle"! We started first by counting our classroom objects. Then, we had images of various objects to count and numbers available, for them to circle the right one. Each row had different amounts of each object. Then, we encouraged the children to count how many items are in each row and circle the number of items they counted. The class was incredibly engaged in the activity, and had a lot of fun! These types of activities support number recognition, visual scanning skills, fine motor skills and focus.
Library
This week in our library session, we changed it up! Instead of reading in the usual library room, we took the books outside and read on a mat in the grass area. There were pillows, a tarp for shade and it was a lovely cozy environment for the children to sit and enjoy some reading! While they were reading, the class relaxed and sat in their own chosen spots. After they finished reading a book of their own choice independently, we finally read a book for the whole class. This time, our book of the day was called "Hooray for Books", a delightful and enthusiastic ode to reading. At the end of the session, we cleaned up our pillows together and put them back into our class. Making the outdoor "library" feel like a special event helps foster a love of reading and builds a fun connection between books and the natural world!
Art
This week our art project was creative and innovative as usual. The class got busy painting with clothespins and pom-poms. This simple and fun activity was so much fun for our class. We started off by clipping a pom-pom onto a clothespin, making it easy for little hands to hold. Afterwards, they chose three colors (red, blue and purple). The kids dipped their pom-pom into the paint and stamped it on their paper. This activity was not only a great chance for them to activate their artistry and imagination, but it was also very helpful for their fine motor skills. The clothespin helps children develop grip and control. The children loved this activity, and even asked if they could use it for another day.
