Greetings dear parents!
How was your week? I hope you're doing great. Ours was so much fun with engaging activities.
Happy Birthday Solomon and Leul
Large group
During our large group sessions this week, we explored the digraph “th”, where the letters t and h come together to make a new sound. The children practiced saying the “th” sound and enjoyed identifying different words that begin with this digraph. We discussed and said words like Thumb, Throne, Three, and Thursday—and they were excited to notice the “Th” sound at the beginning of each one!
For our shape focus, we learned about the cube. Students observed and described its different characteristics, including how it has six sides, and each side is a square. We looked at real-life examples of cubes and talked about how all the sides are equal and perfectly shaped.
In our rhyming word activity, we focused on words that end with the -an sound. The class had fun coming up with and clapping out rhyming words like Pan, Ran, Fan, and Man. They are becoming confident in identifying and creating rhyming pairs!
Students also enjoyed sharing about how they spent their weekend—these conversations were full of energy, stories, and laughter. Afterward, we worked on a few extra problems on the board together, which helped extend our thinking and keep our brains engaged.
As always, everyone looked forward to discovering their classroom job or responsibility for the day. They eagerly accepted their roles and showed responsibility and pride in helping the classroom community run smoothly.
Literacy
This week in our literacy class, we are making great progress. As always, the first group learned new digraphs: "wh" and "th." They practiced saying the sounds with pictures and tried to read more words. In the second session, we provided them with a worksheet that included all the digraph words they have learned so far, where they filled in the letters that make the beginning sound. They are doing amazing with this topic and have started reading simple sentences!
For the next group, this week they focused on CVC words with the vowel letter "o". At first, they practiced with materials, and on another day, we provided them with a worksheet to trace, read, and match CVC words with the vowel letter "o." This group is also making impressive progress. They show a high level of interest and put in great effort to read everything they see.
Additionally, the following group continued working on Zoo Phonics, practicing and identifying letters. Overall, our pre-K class has made significant progress in the literacy sessions, and they are all very excited to learn how to read. We are very proud of each and every one of them and their achievements!
Math
This week in math, we continued with simple addition, building upon what we started last week. In our first session, as we did last time, the students practiced hands-on activities with blocks, using the plus sign and equals sign. They added popsicle sticks, and this time they wrote the results on pieces of paper, which proved to be very helpful. In the second session, we provided them with a worksheet featuring simple addition problems along with coloring pictures. They counted and wrote the number results.
Social Studies and Art
This week, students continued their exciting journey around the world during social studies time by diving deeper into their understanding of continents and countries. We revisited the seven continents and focused on comparing their sizes. The children were especially curious and impressed to learn that Asia is the largest continent, while Australia is the smallest.
In art, students had the opportunity to enhance the flags we’ve been working on by adding small but meaningful details. They carefully added the sun to the Namibian flag, and took their time placing the right colors and shapes on the United Kingdom flag. They also worked on the Kenyan and Ethiopian flags, showing impressive focus and attention to detail. The room buzzed with excitement as they began to see the final results of their work come together.
Students were so proud of the artwork they created, and many eagerly shared their flags with their friends and teachers. Their growing knowledge of world geography, paired with their artistic expression, made for a powerful and meaningful learning experience.
Library
During this week’s library session, we read the story “The Crown and the Gown”, a charming book about a young girl who dreams of becoming a princess. In the story, the girl doesn’t have a crown or a gown at first—but instead of giving up, she uses her imagination and creativity to gather materials around her and make her own. The story beautifully highlights the theme of resourcefulness and the joy of creating something special from what you already have.
As we read, the children were deeply engaged, excited to see what the girl would use next to build her princess look. We paused throughout the story to ask questions like, “What would you use to make your own crown?” and “How do you think the girl felt when she made her own gown?” Many of the children shared ideas like using paper, leaves, ribbons, or recycled materials they could find at home or in the classroom.
We discussed the idea that sometimes we might not have everything we want right away—but with a little creativity, we can find what we need and make something wonderful. This message sparked a great conversation about problem-solving and being proud of our own unique creations.
