Kindergartens sixth week of adventure and Festivities (Damera Celebration)
Dear Parents,
First of all, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you for joining us in our Damera celebration last Thursday! You made the day incredibly fun and memorable for both our children and our school family. We hope you all enjoyed an amazing long weekend with our little ones. Due to having only three teaching days this week, we couldn't deliver our weekly blog on Friday. We also wanted to include the highlights from our beautiful Damera celebration, so we’re here to make it up to you. We hope you enjoy it!
Literacy
It was a vibrant time in literacy last week, as the class got to try something new! During our weekly session, we set up the "LE Friendship Café" in the playground by the dollhouse. We created menus, set up tables, and provided kitchen utensils and aprons. Using a parachute, we made a shaded area for our café. Our children eagerly took turns engaging in various roles, from taking orders with sticky notes to donning chef uniforms and preparing food in the kitchen, and even acting as cashiers. They had a blast while learning the importance of patience during the ordering process, making it a truly teachable moment. Our second literacy activity introduced the concept of the calendar. We focused on September since we are currently in that month. We printed out a September 2024 calendar for the children to color, helping them learn about the number of days in September and how the days of the week are arranged.
Math
In last week's math lesson, we introduced the cash register. Our children had fun exploring the numbers and symbols on it. We connected this to our Literacy Café activity, allowing them to practice taking orders and giving change. Following their exploration of the cash register, they also did some simple finger-counting addition, which was a piece of cake and fun for all of them. Our second activity involved creating "ABAB" patterns. Previously, we introduced patterns during our caterpillar days, and now the children made colorful maple leaf patterns as they wished. It was an exciting time and we love the beautifully inventive patterns they came up with!
Art
We had a fantastic time coloring seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as corn, grapes, pears, carrots, and potatoes last week in art. Each child received a big box of colored pencils and chose their colors for the fruits and veggies. To our delight, they all did a beautiful job! One of our favorite things about this class is their creativity and willingness to try new things.
Gym
Our gymnastics activity was both fun and unique as we explored corn. They started with a little stretching and then engaged in some fun corn yoga poses. They learned about the anatomy of corn , identifying parts from the silk to the husk, kernels, and cob. They peeled and pulled the husk and silk off the corn, shucked the kernels, and had a blast! Later, they tasted the corn prepared in two ways: boiled and fried. Most of them preferred the fried version! This activity was helpful in both cognitive and physical development, allowing them to enhance their fine motor skills while shucking. Plus, we got a delicious snack out of it!
Library
Once again, we took our library outdoors to a new spot, complete with mats and mattresses, and had a guest storyteller. Our children read their books first and then enjoyed storytime with their favorite adult (Biruhe). They loved the first story so much that they asked for another, making it a wonderful outdoor reading moment for all of us.
Damera Celebration
Last Thursday, we had an amazing Damera celebration. Our children rehearsed their songs and dances one last time in class before performing outside. We enjoyed delicious snacks, watched the bonfire, took pictures, and sang together. It truly was a memorable day filled with joy and laughter. Thank you once again, families, for being a part of this special celebration! Your presence made it all the more wonderful.
Farewell
Last Wednesday, we held a farewell party for our beloved Eero. We expressed our love and gratitude, sharing how much we'll miss him. The celebration continued with a school-wide gathering where Eero cut his cake and shared it with his school family. We will deeply miss Eero and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Reminders and notes
This Wednesday Your child will be coming home with a library folder and a story book in it. Make sure to read the story together and return the folder book back the next Wednesday so your child can get a new book.
