Little Learners in Action
Dear parents,
This week in Pre-K has been amazing! Your children learned new skills, played joyfully, and grew emotionally, physically, and academically. From engaging activities to building friendships, they made great strides in their development!
Large group
This week in large group time, the children dove into the letter m! They practiced the sound of the letter m and explored vocabulary words like “monkey,” “mouse,” “milk,” and “Monday.” It was exciting to see them connect the sound to these fun words! In math, we focused on the number 13, practicing counting and recognizing it. The children also had a fun scavenger hunt around the classroom to find the number 13, sharpening their number recognition skills in a playful way.
For the morning message, we reviewed some of the fruits and vegetables we’ve been learning about, sparking insightful conversations about healthy choices. The children also got to practice writing the letter M on the board, proudly showing off their growing fine motor skills. It’s been a week full of learning and discovery!
Science
This week in science, we wrapped up our exploration of healthy foods! The children reviewed everything they’ve learned about fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and different types of meat. They excitedly shared their favorite healthy foods and talked about why these choices are good for our bodies.
In the afternoon, we took our learning outdoors for a hands-on experience. The children prepared their very own salads using fresh tomatoes, lettuce, and cucumbers. They had fun squeezing lemon juice on top, sprinkling a little salt, and then tasting their creations. It was a wonderful way to connect what we’ve been learning to real-life practice—and they loved every bite!
Literacy
This week in Literacy, we focused on two exciting activities. One group practiced recognizing zoo phonics, building a strong foundation for reading and writing. Meanwhile, another group explored rhyming words ending with -at, such as "cat," "hat," and "mat." As they worked on rhyming, they also honed their reading and writing skills by reading the words aloud and writing them down. It was wonderful to see their progress and enthusiasm as they connected sounds to letters and words!
Art
This week in art, we built on the children’s excitement from last week’s session, where they discovered how mixing black and white creates gray. Inspired by their curiosity, the teacher provided a variety of colors for them to explore. The children eagerly mixed two colors at a time, marveling at the new shades created—yellow and blue turned into green, red and yellow made orange, and blue and red transformed into purple.
Their faces lit up with each discovery as they experimented and shared their findings with friends. It was a creative and hands-on session that deepened their understanding of colors and sparked endless excitement!
Library
In our recent library session, the students enjoyed exploring the storybook ‘Kate and Gail’. The children were particularly engaged in discussing what was happening to the characters along the way. They showed excitement and curiosity, asking thoughtful questions about the storyline.
A key highlight of the session was the focus on rhyming words. The book's playful rhymes allowed the children to identify and repeat words that sounded alike. They eagerly participated in identifying rhyming pairs; this not only enhanced their phonological awareness but also encouraged active listening and participation. The session was a delightful blend of storytelling, comprehension, and phonemic fun!
Clay
In a recent clay session, our class came together for an engaging and imaginative activity. Each child received a piece of clay and was encouraged to mold it into the ideas they already had in mind. As the children worked, their creativity truly shone. Some shaped their clay into familiar objects like animals, houses, or favorite foods, while others experimented with abstract designs and patterns. The session was filled with chatter and excitement as they shared their creations and explained their ideas to friends and teachers.
This session allowed the children to express themselves freely while developing their fine motor skills through rolling, pinching, and molding the clay. Sitting together in a circle also fostered a sense of community, as they observed and celebrated each other’s artistic efforts. It was a wonderful opportunity for self-expression, collaboration, and hands-on exploration, leaving the children proud of their imaginative creations!
