Mindful Moments In Pre-K
Greetings dear parents!
How was your week? We hope it was filled with wonderful moments. Here in the Pre K class, we have been through play and laughter. As usual, it was a fantastic week with our little ones, full of fun and engaging activities.
Large group
Our large group is always a beautiful time of day to bond, discuss various topics, and observe the children’s individual and interpersonal development. Part of our daily routine is the “circle time”, which everyone loves. Sitting in a circle helps kids to settle down, focus, and prepare for the day’s activities. During circle time, our children practice taking turns, listening, and expressing their feelings. During this time, we will also learn songs, read books, and tell the days of the week and the months of the year.
Literacy
In our literacy session this week, we did "name decoration". Decorating names in Pre-K can be a delightful activity that helps children recognize their names, explore creativity, and practice fine motor skills. Here are some fun ways to set up this activity. We print out each child’s name in large letters on a piece of construction paper. We gave them various things from the art room (glitter, seeds, rice, beans, and so on) to place along the letters of their name. This lets them practice their fine motor skills while decorating. Overall, it was a delightful activity. The class enjoyed the process of decorating very much, and were so proud of their very own creations.
Math
This week, math was a little different. The activity that the class worked on was called "write the missing number". Finding the missing number can be a great way to encourage early math skills, engage the children and reinforce their understanding of order and counting. On a piece of paper, we printed a series of numbers with a blank part to fill in, for example, 1, 2, , 4, 5, , 7, and so on. We encouraged the children to count each number in order, and when they reach a missing spot, they can write out the missing number to fill it in. Activities like this are wonderful because they can help children develop number recognition, sequencing, and critical thinking skills.
Science
This week in our science class we did a sorting activity about healthy and unhealthy food. First, we divided and labeled Healthy Food And Unhealthy Food with paper. Then we gave the class a mix of printed-out pictures, and explained that their task was to sort out healthy food and unhealthy food. The class got to work right away, sorting happily and busily. After they finished the sorting, they colored the pictures in. This activity helped reinforce their understanding of which foods are best for their bodies, making it a fun and interactive way to learn about healthy choices.
Cooperative game
This week for our cooperative game session, the children did something both engaging and practical- washing our school bicycles. Many of the children in our class love riding bikes during recess time, and they were eager to play a part in the maintenance of their play equipment. First, we found a safe outdoor area where they could get a little wet and messy without worry. Then we encouraged the children to dip the sponge into the soapy water and wipe down the bike frame, handlebars, and wheels. After scrubbing, we rinsed off the soap, this was their favorite part as they got to see the bubbles wash away, leaving a sparkling clean bike behind. Washing a bike isn’t just a fun outdoor activity it teaches children responsibility, helps develop fine and gross motor skills, and gives them a sense of accomplishment. After we finished, they were so happy and proud. They even asked if they could wash something else for next time!
Art
This week in art, we did a simple yet captivating project- painting tulip flowers! Throughout this school year, the class has been discussing plants and nature. To commemorate this interest, the class painted their very own tulips this week. The materials that we used were a brush, fork, and different colored papers. The children created their version of a tulip, sparking creativity and confidence. Activities like this one can help children develop fine motor skills, explore colors, and connect with nature. This is a fun, hands-on project perfect for our little ones.
