Dear Families,
We hope you’ve had an amazing week! Our Early Pre-K class was buzzing with excitement as they dove into a week packed with discovery, creativity, and growth. Through hands-on, interactive activities, they delved into the fascinating worlds of math, science, and literacy. These experiences helped strengthen their cognitive skills, as well as patterning and vocabulary development. Keep reading to discover the fun and enriching moments that made your child’s week so special!
As a reminder, next week on Thursday (March 13) and Friday (March 14) the school will be closed for spring break/teachers training.
Large Group
This week, our Early Pre-K large group sessions were both energetic and educational! We focused on the letter “d”, exploring its sound and building vocabulary with words that start with “d.” During morning message time, the children enjoyed drawing shapes (circle, rectangle, triangle, square, and pentagon) on the board by choosing their favorite shape, which helped them develop their fine motor skills.
In math, we introduced the number “6”, and the class had so much fun counting objects and creating ABAB patterns. We also revisited familiar shapes like circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and pentagons by encouraging the children to draw their favorite shape.
It was a week filled with interactive learning, teamwork, and growth. We can’t wait to see what adventures await next!
Math
This week, our mathematicians embarked on a fun and educational project that involved exploring patterns using markers and blocks that our children discovered through their ABAB pattern project.
The ABAB pattern is a simple yet fundamental concept in mathematics that helps children develop their logical thinking and problem-solving skills. For this project, our children used markers of different colors and blocks to create visually pleasing patterns that followed the ABAB rule. The task was not only educational, but also incredibly fun for our young learners.
The children started by selecting two different colors of markers and blocks. They carefully arranged the markers and blocks in a repeating pattern ABAB. They then extended their pattern by adding more blocks and markers, creating a beautiful sequence that showcased their creativity and attention to detail. The ABAB pattern project was a resounding success, showcasing the power of hands-on learning and creative exploration in math. Our children demonstrated their ability to think critically, problem-solve, and express themselves through the language of patterns.
Science
In our latest science session, we delved into the fascinating world of air transportation. One thing we appreciate most about our class is that each student is filled with curiosity about the world around them! As the final part of our series on different types of transportation, this session focused on the modes of travel that take to the skies - airplanes, helicopters, jet, rocket ship and hot air balloons.
After the informative discussion, we decided to end our session with a fun and interactive game. The children were given a task - to listen attentively as the teacher described one of the air transportation modes using simple words, without directly mentioning its name. The goal was for the children to guess the correct type of transportation based on the clues provided. The excitement and energy in the room were palpable as each child eagerly waited for their turn to guess. Through this game, not only did the children have a blast, but they also reinforced their understanding of air transportation in a fun and engaging way. It was truly a joy to witness their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn.
Music
Music has always been an important part of our lives, and at our school, we believe in introducing children to the joy of creating music from a young age. Recently, our young musicians embarked on an exciting journey into the world of musical instruments, as they practiced playing the piano, xylophone, and shaker.
The sound of piano keys being struck with precision, the melodious tones of the xylophone, and the rhythmic beats of the shaker filled the air as the children practiced diligently. Each instrument presented its own unique challenges and rewards, allowing the children to develop their skills and creativity in different ways. As part of their musical education, the children were tasked with a special assignment - to listen to recordings of various musical instruments played through a speaker and identify them correctly. This exercise not only sharpened their listening skills but also helped them familiarize themselves with the diverse sounds produced by different instruments.
Library
In a recent library session, our students embarked on a journey of learning and discovery with the story titled "The Crown and the Gown”. This captivating tale not only sparked their imaginations but also reinforced their understanding of shapes in mathematics.
The story follows a young girl who dreams of becoming a princess. To achieve her dream, she must create a magnificent crown and gown for herself. As the children followed her journey, they were introduced to various shapes such as circles, triangles, and rectangles, which were used to design the crown and gown.
After the story was read aloud, the children enthusiastically shared their ideas and interpretations of the story. They discussed the different shapes used in the crown and gown, pointing out how each shape played a crucial role in bringing the princess's vision to life. This interactive discussion not only deepened their comprehension of shapes but also allowed them to express their creativity and problem-solving skills.
Literacy
This week, our young learners embarked on an exciting literacy adventure using Zoo Phonics. Through the innovative use of letter flashcards, the children were able to explore the fascinating world of letters and sounds in a way that captured their imaginations and enhanced their understanding of language.
Zoo Phonics is a unique approach to teaching reading and spelling that connects each letter of the alphabet to a corresponding animal character, making learning engaging and memorable for young learners. The children delved into this creative method with enthusiasm, using the colorful letter flashcards to identify the beginning sounds of familiar names and words.
The process was not only packed with learning opportunities but also highly interactive. As the children matched each animal character to its corresponding letter, they were able to make connections between sounds and symbols in a way that brought the alphabet to life. This hands-on approach to learning proved to be incredibly effective, as it engaged the children's senses and boosted their retention of letter sounds.
Our Next Week’s Schedule:
