Scientific Discovery and Active Teamwork in Early Pre K!
Introduction
Dear parents,
We hope you’ve had a wonderful week! This week in our Early Pre-K class, your little adventurers embarked on a journey filled with discovery, learning, and growth. Through a variety of hands-on activities, they explored the wonders of science, literacy, and math, all while developing their cognitive, physical, and social skills. We also focused on teamwork and problem-solving, helping them build confidence and collaboration. Keep reading to see the exciting highlights of your child’s week!
Large Group
In our Early Pre-K large group sessions, the children enjoyed thrilling learning adventures! We focused on the letter "T", discovering its sound and building vocabulary with words that start with "T". During morning message time, the children practiced drawing triangles on the board, taking turns to show off their growing skills. It was a week full of joy and exploration!
In math, we introduced the numbers 1 and 2, and the class had a blast counting objects and identifying these numbers. We also revisited 2D shapes like triangles, squares, and circles, discussing their unique features—such as a triangle’s three sides or a square’s four sides. The week was packed with hands-on learning and teamwork! To wrap up the week, we had a fun, interactive activity where the children sorted animals into categories like sea animals, farm animals, and wild animals. They loved grouping the animals and talking about their unique traits. We also practiced writing the numbers 1 and 2, reinforcing number recognition and sequencing skills. It was a week of exploration, collaboration, and growth!
Science
In this week’s lively science session, the class focused on revising animals. To kick off the session, the students were presented with flashcards featuring various animals from each category. The flashcards not only showcased the visual representation of the animals but also included interesting facts about them. This hands-on approach allowed the students to actively engage with the material and visually connect the animals with their respective habitats.
By hearing the distinct sounds of sea creatures, birds, farm animals, and wild animals, the students were challenged to identify each animal based on its unique sound. This auditory experience enhanced their learning and made the session even more immersive and memorable. Furthermore, the students were tasked with sorting the animals into their respective categories. This activity not only tested their knowledge of different animal species but also encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through collaboration and discussion, the students worked together to correctly categorize each animal, reinforcing their understanding of the animal kingdom.
Literacy
This week in literacy we focused on Zoo Phonics, specifically covering letters A-F. Our students have embarked on a captivating journey through the animal kingdom, where they have not only learned about each letter but also explored the fascinating world of Zoo Phonics. The story of A-F with Zoo Phonics came to life as we delved into the adventures of different animals representing each letter. Whether it was Allie the Alligator showing us how to make the "A" sound, each character captivated our students' attention and imagination.
Through our Zoo Phonics adventure, the students have not only developed a deeper understanding of letter-sound correspondence but have also shown improved phonemic awareness. The multisensory approach of Zoo Phonics, combining visual, and auditory has been highly effective in engaging our students and enhancing their learning experience.
Library
In our library session we read a captivating story titled "Pig Gets Stuck". It proved to be a delightful and educational adventure for all. One of the most remarkable outcomes of this storytelling session was how it sparked the students' memories of what they had learned about farm animals in their science lessons. The characters in the story came to life for them, and they were able to make connections between the animals in the story and the ones they had studied in class.
Math
In this week’s math session the students engaged in a fun and interactive sorting and counting exercise, which aimed to enhance their math skills and promote critical thinking. The activity began with the students sorting various objects into different categories, including animals, markers, musical dots, balls, and cubes. They had to carefully examine each item and decide which category it belonged to based on its characteristics.
Once the sorting was completed, the students proceeded to count the number of items in each category. With enthusiasm and focus, they counted the animals, markers, musical dots, balls, and cubes one by one, ensuring accuracy and precision in their counting. After counting the items, the students were then presented with number flashcards ranging from 1 to 5. They were tasked with matching the counted items with the corresponding numbers on the flashcards. This step encouraged them to practice number recognition and association, reinforcing their understanding of numerical concepts. Throughout the activity, the students demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and a genuine interest in math. They eagerly participated in the tasks and showed great enthusiasm for learning and exploring new math concepts.
Gymnastics
This week, gymnastics took an interdisciplinary approach, combining math skills into their physical activities. In the session, our students were challenged to perform a “Japana” to a 45-degree pose against their friends, with the goal of creating a square shape. This activity not only tested their physical agility and flexibility but also required them to apply their understanding of geometrical concepts learned in their math large group sessions.
Through this exercise, students were able to visualize and manipulate their shapes in real-time, bringing abstract mathematical theories to life. By working together with their peers, they learned the importance of teamwork and communication in achieving a common goal. The combination of math and physical activity not only enhances their understanding of mathematical concepts but also nurtures their flexibility, coordination, and overall physical well-being.
