The Weekly Peek into Early Pre-K

Dear parents,

Welcome to this week’s update on all the wonderful things your children have been learning and exploring! Each week, our Early Pre-K classroom is filled with exciting activities, hands-on experiences, and opportunities for growth. From exploring new concepts in math and literacy to unleashing their creativity through art and play, your little ones have been diving into a world of educational discovery. Here's a glimpse into the fun and learning that took place this week!

Happy Birthday Ami

Large group

In this week’s large group session, our Early Pre-K class had a vibrant and engaging time exploring various concepts. First, we learned about the number 12. The children practiced counting different sets of 12 objects, helping them develop their number recognition and counting skills. We also introduced the sound of the letter L, encouraging the children to practice making the sound and thinking of words that start with L.

Additionally, the class explored the sphere shape, discussing how it is round and how it can roll. To make this concept hands-on, the children rolled balls to each other, observing how spheres move and sharing lots of laughter as they played. The exploration continued with the color gray. The children reviewed how gray can be created by mixing black and white, tying into their recent art activities.

During the morning activities and board messages, the class counted numbers up to 20 together, strengthening their number sequence skills.

They also had a lively discussion about their favorite fruits or vegetables, sharing their preferences with friends. Lastly, the children reminisced about the diplomatic bazaar they visited last Saturday, eagerly talking about what they saw, ate, and did there, making connections between their experiences and classroom learning.

This large group session was a wonderful blend of math, literacy, shapes, colors, and social learning, keeping the children curious and excited!

Math

Last Monday, our Early Pre-K class began an exciting new topic—measurement! The children dove into exploring the concepts of big, small, short, long, and tall through hands-on activities and playful learning. Using a variety of materials, such as different-sized balls, the students compared objects to identify which ones were bigger or smaller.

They rolled the balls and grouped them by size, sparking conversations about how they differed. Another highlight of the day was when the children compared their heights to the ruler. They stood next to the ruler, laughing and cheering as they discovered who was taller or shorter. This activity helped them connect the abstract ideas of "tall" and "short" to their own bodies in a fun and personal way.

Through these interactive exercises, the children began building foundational mathematics and observational skills while enjoying a playful exploration of measurement. We're looking forward to continuing this journey of discovery in the coming weeks!

Library

Early Pre-K class enjoyed a cozy library session, where we read the heartwarming book ‘Best Friends Forever’. The story follows a bear who feels lonely after moving to a new house. Missing his old friends, his mom suggests a wonderful idea: writing a letter to tell them how he feels.

To his delight, his friends received his letters and surprised him by visiting, reminding him that true friendship knows no distance. The children were captivated by the story, especially when the bear's friends arrived at his new home. It was a wonderful session filled with empathy, creativity, and the joy of celebrating friendship!

Science

This week in our Early Pre-K science session, the children continued their exciting journey of learning about healthy foods. This week’s focus was on different types of protein-rich foods, including meat, fish, and chicken. The session began with a lively discussion about these foods, where the children eagerly shared which ones they had seen or tried at home. They then participated in a fun sorting activity. Using pictures, they sorted vegetables, fruits, and meats into separate groups, reinforcing their understanding of different food categories.

Later in the afternoon, the focus shifted to fruits as the children engaged in a hands-on activity. Each child got the chance to chop pieces of fruits like bananas, apples, and strawberries with kid-safe tools. They carefully arranged the fruit on wooden sticks, creating colorful fruit skewers. The children enjoyed eating the fruits together outside in the fresh air.

Literacy

In this week’s literacy session, our class continued exploring rhyming words, focusing on words that end with -at. Together, we introduced words like cat, mat, hat, and rat, emphasizing how we can create new words by simply changing the first sound. We wrote each word on the board for the children to see, sounding them out together as a class.

The children were fascinated by how the same ending sound stayed the same, while the beginning sound changed to make a new word. After practicing as a group, we erased the words from the board to challenge their memory and understanding. Some of the students showed great enthusiasm and volunteered to write the words themselves on the board. With encouragement, they carefully sounded out each word and practiced forming the letters. It was a joy to see their confidence grow as they realized they could write and read these rhyming words on their own. This session was a wonderful step forward in developing early literacy skills, building phonemic awareness, and sparking excitement about reading and writing!

Art

In this week’s art session, our early Pre-K class explored the process of creating the color gray, as it’s our color of the week. The session began with a fun discussion about the color gray and how it is made. The children were excited to discover that by mixing white and black paint, they could create this new color. With their brushes in hand, the students eagerly experimented with blending the two colors. They watched in amazement as the paints swirled together, transforming into gray. Once they had created their own shades of gray, the children were encouraged to use the color in a free-painting activity.

Gymnastics

This week in our gymnastics session, the children had a fantastic time developing their gross and fine motor skills moving cubes from one hula hoop to the other using their hand as a warm up.

After that, they did Japana - A flexibility position where the children are seated forward fold with their legs straddled a part to 45°- to develop their stretching one by one for 10 seconds each side. Moreover, the session helped them to recall and sense the shape (cube) they recently learned in Math while developing their gross and fine motor skills.
