Week 29: Kindergarten Capers: Drama, Dough, and Delicious Designs!
Dear Family, we hope you all had an amazing week! Our kindergarten world was buzzing with activity this week – five whole days packed with hands-on learning and fun. We look forward to sharing some of our adventures with you, and hope to see you all at family day tomorrow!
Large Group:
After our usual start – calendar time, Family Day countdown, and a peek at the day's activities – our large group time was all about presentations. Remember those class projects we've been working on? This week, our children took turns presenting their projects to their friends, explaining what they were about and how they made them. It was wonderful to see how excited and confident they were to share their hard work. These moments are so valuable for building their confidence and self-expression!
“No, that’s peninsula the green one is island okay” -Hekima
“We only have two Asia and 2000 Africa in this class” -Lucas
“I want to do the water cycle one I love the water cycle” -Adelene
Literacy:
Lights, Camera, Kindergarten! We took literacy to a whole new level this week with a "Drama" session! Building on last week's activity of sharing personal photos and stories, the children worked in groups of three to create their own mini-plays. They rehearsed their storylines and even chose costumes for the big performance day. We transformed the classroom by laying out a big purple mattress to create a stage. Each group took their turn, and it was truly a special and creative experience. It’s amazing to see their imaginations come to life!
“I will be your ballerina teacher and while I am training you in class Hekima is going to come and push and you cry okay” -Leayene
“I’m ultraman and you’re the princess okay Yeabsera and Jr. will be my friend but we also need a monster” -Lucas
“You are a princess and I will be Spider-Man and Adelene is super girl and you will be stuck in your castle and we’re going to save you” -Umar
Math:
Our math focus continued on math symbols. Our students practiced identifying the symbols, matching them, and even using their "nicknames." Now that they're more comfortable with the symbols, we started using them with numbers. This was a great opportunity to assess their understanding and see where they might need extra support.
“But addition and multiplication are the same symbols see?” -Yeabsera
“And percent and division two yeah?” -Abigail
Science:
Continuing our exploration of chemical and physical changes, we had a delicious hands-on activity: baking bread! We reviewed the concepts and discussed examples of physical and chemical reactions. Then, we talked about what happens when we mix the ingredients and bake them. We discussed the changes and what happens when we break the bread. The best part? Everyone got to participate in mixing and measuring, putting their all into creating the perfect dough. Each child took a loaf home to share with their families, and the feedback was fantastic!
“Mix mix mix give me” -Eliyab
“That’s enough salt or it’s gonna be so salty” -Junior
“My mom puts the flour first but he Eliyab is putting the sugar first” -Tang Tang
Art:
As you know, our kindergarten class is responsible for the café center – they came up with the idea and helped set it up. This week, we focused our art session on creating food and beverage drawings to decorate the café. Some of our children even wrote menu descriptions with names and prices they thought would be fitting. They were so responsible and excited to contribute to this fun project!
